Celebrating Mike Chunn: The Founder of Play It Strange

Thanks for joining us to celebrate a big milestone for Play It Strange. We're here to honor the amazing career of our founder, Mike Chunn.

This isn't just a goodbye, but a huge thank you for all Mike has done.

Mike's music journey is super inspiring. As a founding member of the legendary New Zealand bands Split Enz and Citizen Band, he made his mark early. But what really stands out is his passion for helping young musicians, which will be his lasting legacy.

In 2003, Mike started Play It Strange, believing in music's power to change lives. His goal was clear: give young Kiwis a chance to discover their musical talents, express themselves, and share their music. Under his leadership, Play It Strange has been inspirational for many young musicians.

Mike's efforts created a supportive space where creativity thrives. Play It Strange has organized competitions, workshops, and recording opportunities, all aimed at empowering young artists. Mike's dedication has built confidence and self-worth in so many.

One standout thing about Mike's work is his commitment to inclusivity. He made sure Play It Strange was accessible to all young people, no matter their background. This opened doors for many who might have missed out, showing his belief in everyone's potential.

I have been lucky enough to witness firsthand this inclusiveness in working with Neuro Diverse teenagers and see the self-belief and esteem that Mike has generated for them from his involvement.

Mike has been a mentor, guide, and friend to countless aspiring musicians. His love for music and genuine care for young people have left a lasting impact on everyone. His enthusiasm and belief in music's power have inspired many.

As Mike retires, we reflect on the huge impact he's had on young New Zealanders. His work with Play It Strange has left a legacy of inspiration that will continue for generations. The seeds of creativity he's planted will grow into future musical talent and create self-belief in so many youths involved in the song writing competitions.

Mike's influence will stay with us as a song writing Judge, contributor and of course, our founder who we can call on in the appropriate situation.

Let's celebrate Mike Chunn's incredible journey. Let's honor his achievements and unwavering commitment to music. As we say goodbye, let's thank him for his endless hours, energy, and passion.
